After flattening I want my shells to be either oriented vertically or horizontally. When rotating them I can never stop at exactly vertical or horizontal. They are always a little off. Is there some way to turn on a snap so lines will be straight instead of crooked? |

You can use Ctrl and the keyboard arrow keys to align an edge either vertically or horizontally (e.g. aim the pointer at an edge, and type Ctrl-UpArrow to make it perfectly vertical).
Also, in the latest update (v2.05.00) there's a new option in the packing tool - Align Shells to Axes - that will rotate all shells being packed so that the majority of edges in each shell are either vertical or horizontal.

Why do some shells turn upside down when I do this? |

If it flips the wrong way, do the same again but with the opposite key. What it should really do is work out the minimum rotation required to get the alignment, but currently the angle is dependent on the orders of vertexes in the mesh, so its pretty unpredictable.
