I'm wondering if there is a way to do a simple align along the top or along the side for selected UVs in UV Layout. I don't want to have to use the relax or i key to mess with existing UVs so I want something like what you have in Maya:

is there a way to do that? |

Not exactly like that. You can snap boundary UVs to a straight line; tag each end point with S, then use double-S or shift-S on any point between them to straighten that edge. You can then move the end points if you like and the points between stay in a straight line.
There's no way currently though to apply that to internal UVs. Maybe though you only need it on the boundary UVs anyway?

ok - I tried it but it seems to behave unpredictably when you're working around the corners.
Also, how do I unmark them once they're selected? |

The S key toggles the end points on and off, and you can use Shift-P to unselect all the pinned boundary points.
Regarding unpredictability, I haven't seen or heard of anything like that happening before. In case you're missing something critical about how its used, the video is here ...
