UVs always map to a tile, you can place individual shells within that tile in whatever manner you chose - if you wish to lay them out in a grid pattern then you can do so, but it's not going to be a very efficient use of the UV space available.
I am probably just misunderstanding what you are asking though, so can you give a little more detail describing exactly what you mean by a grid please?

Maybe by "no tiles" you mean no shells ... well, just the one then. That is, the whole surface flattened down to just one continuous piece. That's certainly possible, but you'll have to accept some distortion (red and blue) to get that style of UVs.
The way to do it is to cut and flatten the pieces as usual, then weld them back together as best you can to avoid overlaps. One trick is to only use the "B" hotkey after you've welded shells to smooth out the join between them. Don't use the "F" key, because that may change the overall shape too much and will bring back the overlaps you're trying to avoid.

I started the thread, hoping to solve a problem using UV Layout, looks like I have to go another route, thank you for the reply and help |

It may be that UVLayout could help to solve the problem; we're just not too clear on what your problem is. One of the problems that occurs with the proliferation of different solutions is that sometimes the same thing can end up being known by different names - so it may be that you are asking something that makes perfect sense in your syntax of knowledge; but we're just not on the same wavelength, as it were.
Can you describe your problem in simpler terms - perhaps a sketch of what you want... working on the picture saves a thousand words principal?

I want to stack the UV faces from a 9-polygon grid on top of one another via UV, I hope that helped |
