No bounding box in UV edit area...

Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone can explain to me why there is no bounding box in the UV edit area when I go to flatten a part of my model. Do I have to create the bounding box (the area in which the flattened UVs go...the red box) and if so, how do I do that? If someone can please explain this to me that would be great. Thanks.

Within the UV editor view, the 'bounding box' is automatically created - if you have any flattened shells outside of the initial boundary then extra boundaries are created automatically. Is that what you mean?

Check out the video for basic flattening if you're struggling with the concept.

Thanks for the response. What I meant was that the bounding box is not even there to start with. After I bring something in to be flattened there in no bounding box at all. I am really confused as to why this is because in all the videos I have seen, the bounding box is there from the get go. Is there a setting that I need to change so that the bounding box will appear in the UV editor? Thanks.

Is it possible that you are zoomed in too close to see the bounding box? If you only have a few small shells then, perhaps, they might not be enough to fill the box.

Try zooming out (right mouse button & move; or mouse wheel roll) to see more of the work area.

Thanks for the help. I just zoomed all the way out and still I see no bounding box. This is really odd. I have the latest pro version. I have attached a picture to give you a better idea of what is going on. As you can see, there is no "red box" around the flattened UV.

Okay, try going to 'Pack' and click on 'Pack All' - it should take no time at all with the single shell, but it should zoom out to show the full tile.

Depending upon what the item is that you've flattened there, it might be a lot smaller in UV space than you imagine.

I'm sure you'll find that the bounding box is there, but, without casting any aspersions upon you, you do realise that it is the bounding box of the whole tile (0,0)-(1,1) in UV space, not the bounding box of the shell dropped don't you?

If you use the End hotkey (comma works too), then the current view is zoomed to fit the UV square ... it would be interesting to know where it actually is!

But yes Geoff, using the pack tool is what I'd also use to gather everything together in one place and it fits the UV square round all of that.

If after all of that you still dont see the UV square, then its sounding like a bug. Which version of UVLayout are you using?

I am using version iuvlayout-pro-2.08.01c.exe from the extras area. This problem is also in version 2.08.00 for me. I will try what you said and see if that works. Thanks for the help.

OK, if its the latest version, then check the "Set Size" Load preference. Normally that's on "0", indicating that the UV size is adjusted for each mesh, but maybe if you had that set for some other scene with a totally different geometry scale, that's messing things up for this new model.

Thanks for the replies. I just checked the "Set Size" preference and it is already at 0. Is there anything else I can do? By the way, I also pressed both hotkeys that you mentioned and when I do, the UVs go away (just disappear). It is only after I press the "period" key that the UVs come back but still no bounding box.

Did you see the UV box at all when you did "End"? Also, did repacking help at all?

I did not see a UV box after pressing the "end" hotkey. What I have figured out is if I select all or just one of my UVs and select "new box" followed by changing the tile area to at least 2x2 and then selecting "pack all", then a UV box appears. Yet when I initially put a UV into the "UV edit" area there is no UV box. Is this a bug or just how the program is supposed to be?

Sounds like a bug, but there's also possibly something unusual about your OBJ file too.

The initial UV box size is based on the total area of polygons in the OBJ file, so if that small UV shell you are showing us is just a small piece of something huge (e.g. a mouse in an aircraft hanger) then that could explain the problem. If you are willing and able to email me your original OBJ file, I can check it out for you.

Good to hear its working now!

I had a look at your OBJ file ... nothing odd in there, but I did notice its been saved out of UVLayout, so may have been cleaned. If you still have the original OBJ file, one untouched by UVLayout, then maybe it would explain why things went wrong there for a while.
