howdy Phil,

Is there any way to show an XYZ axis (for reference to placing cuts)?

Couple of times I've run across trying to set a seam along a particular axis
and was wondering if it's perhaps an undocumented hotkey somewhere...

No, sorry, no secret hot key for that exactly. But this might work for you ...

Hold Space and tap the Home key; that'll reset the view so its looking directly along one of the axes, then you can use the key pad left and right arrow keys to rotate the view by 30 degrees, so 3 times to rotate 90.
