I've noticed that sometimes when I try to flatten certain shells, a black shape will appear and it screws with the flattening process. It feels like UVL is trying to tell me that two points are still somehow connected that shouldn't be, but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do in these situations.

It only happens with C and N flatten modes. O-mode doesn't produce the black lines.

That's "webbing".

I'm guessing whats probably happened is that you dropped a larger section and used Shift-F to flatten it out initially, then split that shell into smaller pieces. Holes in the initial section would be tagged with webbing automatically, which keeps them open during the flattening process, but now you've split that apart and the webbing is still being applied to that section of the hole.

Those edges will be highlighted in either a thicker yellow or thicker magenta line to indicate the webbing, but that can be removed with either Shift-T key or Backspace.
