The .OBJ file format can contain vertex and polygon grouping information.
If a .OBJ file with grouping info in it is imported into UVLayout, will it be exported with all that grouping information intact? Some programs lose that info along the way.
I haven't bought it yet, just planning ahead. |

If you use the normal "Save" button, then the grouping information is indeed lost, but there's an "Update" button right next to it that preserves all of that information. Click on Update, select the original OBJ file, and UVLayout writes out a copy with only the UVs modified.
You can test all of this yourself in the Demo version, which you can get from uvlayout.com/try

Oh!
Well, that's great to know. Just color me stupid, but I didn't think there was a demo and didn't even look.
Thanks for the info, that's great to know!
The reason I asked is I have a few figures I would like to remap, but of course are all set up with poly and point groupings. It's bad enough I'll have to repaint textures for them, but to regroup everything would be a pain... and then I'd have to create new skeletons probably.
I'll check out the demo then. |

"I'll have to repaint textures for them"
So if I wrote something that took old UVs and new UVs and recalculated the map, you'd find that handy? There would be some blurring due to the resampling, but at least it could be a guide for the repainting.

Possibly in some cases that would be cool.
Can that even be done?
Honestly though, while I might use something like that, I wouldn't want to be responsible for egging you on to do it.
But in reality, those figures need a good repainting anyway, and once I re-UV them I think the stretching would be too much. |

I could find a use for that! (of course, as long as it didn't get in the way of other
major progress) |

I've done similar things before, so I'm thinking it wont be that much of an obstruction. Anyway, it sounds like a lot more fun than useful things like a Redo function ;-)
Its added to the list, so will probably get looked at sometime early next year. Things are beginning to wind down before our summer holidays, so UVLayout development will probably go a bit quiet for the next month.
