Im not sure how to fix this. It is a tapered column. I've included a snap shot. As you can see the edges do not line up |

To get matching UVs across a seam, you need make sure they line up in the UV view. See below ... the UVs on the cube over to the left are slightly twisted, and that's what you get when its mapped too.
The UVs for the cube on the right have been lined up square, and so the mapping across the seam is even. You can get square UVs in a number of ways, either via the snap grid, by using anchor points, or with the Ctrl-I edge straightening hotkey.

Thanks for your previous explanation. I have tried what you suggested it did not work for me. I watched the edge straightening movie also. There are a few odd things going on. First, when I shrunk my UV's (column) to fit within the border (UV space) the color went from a light green to a red. Second, when I tried using the edge straighten tool (using the "A" key), there were no points on the mesh for me to pull to line up with the anchor point. Then I tried using the method you recommended (control I) and nothing happened to the mesh.
thanks again for you help,

"I shrunk my UV's (column) to fit within the border (UV space)"
Actually its best to do that the other way around ... scale the UV space up to fit the UVs, and the quickest way is to do that is to pack shells using the '[' hotkey. Normally in UVLayout you don't want to be scaling the UVs up and down because that changes the 1-to-1 size relationship between the UVs and the geometry, and that's why it changed color to red, indicating stretching.
To get the Ctrl-I to work, you need to reflatten (ie F hotkey or Optimize Run For button).

I really appreciate your help. As you can see I am new to this. I done everything you have told me and each time I advance a little further. I am stuck at this point. I straighten out one edge using the straight edge technique, however, I can not straighten out the opposite side. I tried shift "s" and "SS". Nothing appears to happen. Again, any help would be great, |

When you do the Shift-S, your mouse pointer has to be aimed at a UV point on the boundary. Zoom the view in to make sure you're getting that boundary point and not one next to it on the inside.
