I have a mesh... not going to post it publically because I'm eventually going to sell it, but I can send you (Phil) a copy directly.

Every time I try to do anything to do it, I eventually get this message and the non-controls window dies.

Fatal error confirmed! I played around for quite a while under Linux and had no problems, but just booted up the Windows box and got the fatal error after a few minutes.

I don't have any answers or fixes yet, but will keep on working on it until I find one. I did notice a few "odd" things happening before it crashed out though (edges not picking) so if you see anything yourself, save your work and reload.

Still no fix, but a question ... do you have "Optimized Picking" turned on in the Preferences? Thats the cause of the picking problem I had, but it may or may not be related to the crashing. Anyway, turn it off if you have it on, and see if that helps.

I got the crash both ways (picking optimised and not) -- but I finally managed to get past it... by saving every time I did anything significant (greeny-orange-button-saving) and reloading (since it only killed the view window, not the control panel window).

The error was coming up not on picking, but on detaching for me.

There was only one other issue I had -- I hadn't symmetrised the eyes, so I undropped them and couldn't get one piece of them to redrop after because the ed view was saying 'already dropped' which was pretty weird, because it was very clear it wasn't because, you know... it showed up in there at all.

Anyway I saved and reloaded it from that point and was able to redrop the eyes.

I did find a few goobers in the mesh, granted -- things I can fix later (extra verts along the centre-line etc) but I imagine they shouldn't break stuff here.

Right now I am getting a pack that's leaving something off on the side that I cannot find. I will try save-reload on that too. But I have to run to a store to return a frame first.

"I got the crash both ways"

OK, thanks for the feedback! I'm still hunting for the problem ... I think I just caught a glimpse of it though ... something to do with detaching mirrored shells when symmetry is on.

I'll post as a new bug -- researched and found specifics.
