When I have an inside edge that has no splits in it the edge has a purple line on it. What does this signify? Is it bad? Good? Just wondering if anyone knows.

Its probably a webbing loop. These are automatically applied to holes when you use the Shift-F hotkey on an unflattened piece of mesh. It helps to keep the hole open, otherwise the surrounding polys can sometimes push in and collapse the hole. You can remove and add these by hand with Shift-T on one of the edges. Its covered in the UVLayout-Beta-v1.12.mov video.
