In OS X with latest X-Quartz, I am getting a lot of missing join hits. Watch how long it takes me to get this W key register:

I've intentionally made the ends of edges a dead spot as far as the C/W tagging goes, and its 5% of the total length. The reasoning behind this is to minimize the accidental tagging of adjacent edges if you get close to a vertex.

Looking at your video there, you're trying to tag at the ends of some very long edges, so this may be the reason for things not happening as expected. Aim more towards the middle of the edge and see if that helps.
