I'm wondering if there is a way to select shells that are in UV space by marking a continuous mesh in 3D space (Ctrl-G). This way I could select what I want to have packed in it's own box.

In this instance I am creating rapid UVs for hard surface geo, similar to scaffolding.
I want to pack them so they are an easily visible reference for material assignments. If that makes any sense..

Worth pointing out that this something that I would want to do after I have already segment marked poly.

Here's a way ... mark fill the object in the 3D view, then do H-G to hide it, then H-S to bring it back and hide everything else. Switch to the UV view and you should only see the shells for that object, so you can now LMB stretch a box to select and box them all.
