I accidentally closed my display window in the middle of a project and couldn't find a way to get it back.
So I just had to exit the program and reload it. Is there a way to get the display window back if it's been closed?
Thanks. |

By display window, do you mean the editing window, where all the 2D/3D graphics is displayed? That's actually a separate process to the GUI, so if you kill it, its gone for good!
Someone has just asked for an autosave, which should help with recovering lost work, but saving regularly is also a good idea.

Hi Phil,
Yeah that's what I meant - the editing window.
I didn't lose the work though because the main UV Layout control panel (or whatever you call it) stays open and I can still save before closing and reopening.
I've done this several times actually, just finally decided to ask, since I couldn't come up with another way. See, there's no minimize button for the editing window, just that red X, and I hit it occasionally out of habit, thinking I'm going to be minimizing it.
I know we can minimize everything from the main panel, but I'm used to grabbing at the largest window in a program for changes like that.
I save constantly in all the apps I work with - probably far more than most people. I regularly have to wipe out hundreds of files after I finish a project. Just a habit I got into long ago.
So I'm not worried about an autosave, but making that editing window dummy-proofed would be cool. |

Sorry, you actually did lose work! UVLayout isn't a single application; the GUI with all the buttons etc is one program, and the 3D window is another one, and they send message back and forth as you are working. All the data about the loaded mesh is held within the 3D window application, so kill that and all the data is lost. Clicking "Save" back in the GUI has only sent a "save the data" message to the 3D window, but since its not there anymore, nothing would have happened.
"no minimize button for the editing window, just that red X, and I hit it occasionally out of habit,"
OK, understood! The Windows and Linux versions have the minimize on the 3D window, so I'll check out why its not there under OS X.

I guess I did lose what I was working on. I must have opened the wrong file back up. Since I save often I didn't notice.
I'm not using OS X, I'm using Windows 7, and there is no minimize icon on the 3D window. Right clicking on it shows also that "minimize" and "maximize" are disabled; grayed out.
Maybe a Windows 7 thing? Maybe Aero? But seriously, it's not there. |

My mistake ... I wrote without checking! You are correct, there is no minimize on the 3D window under Windows either. There is on the Linux version, which is where I do most of my work.
I'm thinking I might be able to trap the kill event to pop up a "did you really mean that?". Also I'll take a look at why there's no minimize.

I just watched your most recent video, the "Tank-1.mov" video, and your 3D window there is obviously Windows and there's no minimize button on it either.
You made me think my Windows was broken.
Now, we are talking about the view window, the 3D/Edit/UV window where all the models and UVs are displayed, right?
I know the main control panel has the typical minimize, maximize and close buttons.
And I try to remember to use them . |

Thanks.
Apparently we cross-posted here, so you can ignore the above. |
