we all use uvlayout at work, i dont know if it does this for Maya, but it does for me in softimage. i have all of my objects, like...30 pieces, i export them all in one .obj file and unwrap and bring back to softimage and everything is now one piece? Ive been using uvlayout since beta and as far back as i can remember its done this to me? its really annoying to have to go back and break up everything again...also i know its not my exported obj. if i export from xsi and import in Maya everything is in pieces still. is there some option in uvlayout that will not save everything as one solid mesh? incredibly time wasting having to do what Ive been doing. thanks for any help btw.

Instead of "Save", have you tried using the "Update" button? You'd select the OBJ that was exported from XSI, then UVLayout makes a copy and only updates the UVs, preserving all other information like materials/groups.
