Im trying to unwrap a pillar. Most of it is working great, it unwraps teh cylindrical parts flat and proportional. But i came to a piece that will not, it has a curve to it so i went and used s on edges them shift s to straighten so its flat now, but the edges are unporpotionate, how do i fix that?

That first flattened shape is the most distortion free layout ... your column shape is smaller at the top than the bottom, so you naturally end up with something that looks like a flattened out cone.
But yes, you can make it rectangular if you want. You can add a couple of anchor points, one on each diagonal corner, with the 'A' hotkey, then move the other pair of corners and it'll make a rectangle. Or if you have the Pro version, then the 'I' hotkey is an alternate to pinning to make edges square.
