Phil, in your video on edge straightening, you mentioned that you may combine boundary edge functions with interior edge functions. Just wanted to say I think that's a great idea. As far as making selections and doing things like splits and welds and other modifiers, there should be no distinction. An edge is an edge.
Loving the app so far, thanks man.
Biggest thing I think it's missing is a RMB contextual menu as an alternative to the massive amount of hotkeys we have to learn
It works well in Maya and loads of other apps. It may not be hotkey-fast, but it's still a fast way to work, and it would instantly lower the learning curve for the software. Plus, you could keep the hotkey system in tact for those who prefer it. Win-win. Only part that sucks is that it's work for you. |

"may combine boundary edge functions with interior edge functions"
And I did! The K and I hotkeys work on interior and boundary edges in the latest versions.
"Only part that sucks is that it's work for you"
Exactly :-) I appreciate that new users find the hotkeys and old style GUI a turn-off, and it probably scares many potential buyers away, but leaving it that way for now lets me spend more time on the underlying mechanics. My aim is to make UVLayout technically the best it can be, then I'll go back and address the GUI uglinesses.

I have no problems with the all the keys. Once used a couple of time you know which will do what.
The gui is no problem either. The uv-unwrapping is the most important thing here and that does the job more than well.
Peace,

Yeah Phil, I've perused around on these forums enough to see that many new users suggest UI improvements, and that you're more focused on functionality stuff for the foreseeable future. From a development perspective that makes sense, especially if the development of UVL is a one man operation. You have to choose your battles wisely.
I see that you put polls up once and a while when you're ready to make improvements, but you aren't sure where to focus your efforts. I guess when enough of your end users start voting or UI upgrades, you'll consider making them
Thanks again for your time and a great product.
Rich-Art, the UI clearly isn't a deal-breaker for me. I bought the software after watching a few of Phil's videos, so I knew what I was getting. I don't like the UI because I'm an aesthetics junkie with OCD, but it isn't going to keep me from using great software. I'm already getting more comfortable with the hotkeys, but I don't do UV work every day, so I can just imagine having to reorient myself to the hotkeys when I pick the program up again after a few days. I have a ton of hotkeys to remember for Max, Photoshop, and ZBrush. As fast as hotkeys are, it would would simply be welcome reprieve to have the option to not have to learn more hotkeys. |
