I have read that using the update instead of the save will keep my materials intact. I still do not understand how to use it though. On my current project I have been using the update, but cannot find my materials. My original file still has the materials on it, however the uv mapping has NOT been updating when I press the update button. I should have checked this a month ago, but happily worked on updating as I went. Now I have to start over from square one apparently.

What I can figure out is that I must have used the Clean options to import my project when UVLayout kept choking on it. The materials must have stripped out then. Live and learn. I have upped my shells to five thousand. Now I will not have to use the Clean option.

Sorry about that! I hope to be able to do material groups properly someday.
