Working on my own obj models, the rotate(left-click) is weird that I cannot rotate to observe all viewpoints-have a feel that its blocked, stopping rotate.
There is no the problem if I open UVLayout and work on the default torus.

Yes, by default its locked so that the Y-axis is always up. Under the Display panel you'll see four choices for "Up" ... the "Free" one will let you tumble the object around without any restrictions.
