Dropping into UV Space

After cutting my mesh and dropping the mesh into the UV display, my mesh is in the top view instead of the front view. See attachment. How do you put the mesh into the front view in the UV display.

Once dropped into UV space, you cant do any 3D rotations of the meshes. What you should be doing next though is flattening the shape out. Have a look at the "Head" tutorial videos here ...

is there something I could have done in the edit display in order to have prevented it from dropping in the top view?

No, sorry, but really you shouldn't worry about it ... its not going to affect the final flattened result.
