Heya. this isn't a full fledged bug. More like a larva. A polish sort of thing. In the sense of "polishing it up" not the sense of "sauerkraut and sausage".

Anyway:

When you set time in optimise, the text box keeps the focus.
When you do other things afterwards -- things that involve use of the spacebar to stop them -- the spaces seem to end up in that text box. When you go to change the time-- say it's lunch and you figure "hell, run for an hour" -- there's a tonne of spaces to erase or select and it looks pretty weird.

The text box will keep focus while your pointer is over the GUI windows, but as soon as you hit a key (including space) with the pointer over the 3D window, the focus should shift. I just tested it here and it worked.

Maybe it was just a temporary confusion. Can you get it to go wrong consistently?
