Hi there, have you got your mouse pointer over the selected shell when you press the arrow keys to flip it ? |

I'm still not quite sure what you are looking to do . Could you post a screenshot ? It might be easier to show than describe. |

That body has been dropped in the "UV" space ... it just looks 3D because it hasn't been flattened out yet. What you need to do it "undrop" it with Shift-D ... that moves it back into the "Ed" space where you can rotate the view, and then you'll be able to view the front and cut it up into smaller pieces.

hey, sorry guys for not being so clear. ive cut my seams in the body mesh already in edit mode, which runs along the back, arms and instep. just when ever i drop it into UV mode it is placed this way instead of the chest facing the screen. i am copying a method which is shown in a "digital tutors" tutorial. |

OK, when UVLayout drops the mesh into UV space it works out the average surface normal for that shell, and faces that up. On an open shell this works fine, but for closed shells like your torso it could end up pointing anywhere really.
But its not a disaster ... your next step normally would be to stretch/bloat that shell out with Shift-F, and that doesn't care which way the mesh is facing. There's no way to rotate shells in the UV view because I've found there hasn't been a need to.
