Is there a way of I can split edge on a cube which is completly solid ? i.e. no open faces all edges/ verticies are merged.

Is it only possible to use the split edge when you have an open face somwhere on the object?

What do all the colour variations mean on the UVs when its being laidout?
I assume red is not good and could mean overlapping and blueish is to do with flipped faces, but what about dark blue and the others?

One last thing when I have just 1 object Ive unwrapped...why does the UVs turn red when I reduce them down to fit in the square?

No, you'll first need to detach at least one face using the C or G and Enter hotkeys.

The type of error remaining. Green is little or no error, red is where an applied texture with appear stretched, and blue is where it'll be bunched up.

why does the UVs turn red when I reduce them down to fit in the square?
Because you are making it smaller, which will stretch the texture. Click on the "Auto Fit" button to make the square bigger instead.

So how was the torus unwrapped ....the object you get when you 'test' UV layout? I've looked at it the UVs looked at the edit mode to see the cuts.

How do I do this with the above C or G Hotkeys... I've tried this with loading in my own torus ...it seems I cant split seams, it doesn't detach when I cut seams, I can mark polys and detach but it looks like this is not the way the 'test' torus was done.

How were the seams done and unwrapped on this?

The torus was initially cut up into 4 pieces/wedges, each flattened separately, then welded back together to create the final one shell layout. I think its the v1.5 movie that introduces the welding tool.
