How do you enable grid on the shells?

Some videos show checkers and numbers on uv'd shells. When it shows, 'g' is being pushed. When I hold 'g' it selects faces. How do I display checkers or numbers on the shells?

Sorry about the old videos showing out of date information ... I'll be rerecording most of those sometime soon hopefully. The G hotkey got changed to T (for texture) in recent versions of UVLayout.
