I'm UV mapping some Poser clothing, which is symmetrical and roughly cylindrical (meaning I'd start with a Y axis cylindrical map in UVMapper). After cutting seams, I find Shift-F is the best way to get a flattened map; but the UVs always end up "skewed" (see picture).

I'm a newbie at UVLayout, so I'm probably skipping some vital step.

Any advice?

Hi Bob, if you watch the last movie v1.17 http://www.headus.com/au/doc/uvlayout/videos/UVLayout-Beta-v1.17.mov
it should solve your problem.

Got it, thanks. My mesh wasn't as symmetrical as I'd thought, which is probably why it was going wrong in the first place. Sad

You could also try the older "Symm" tool thats under the Stack panel ... it just makes the boundary symmetrical, so might work better if your mesh isn't perfectly symmetrical all over. Theres a video or two on that tool as well.

Oops, I see that now looking closer at your pic. If you really need it symmetrical you could use a modelling app and delete half then mirror and weld the geom.

Phil: Thanks, I'll check those out. Any idea which videos apply?

If the symmetry finder costs more money, a cheaper way to do it will be useful when the time comes to fork out my hard earned cash; and I'm beginning to think that UVLayout will soon be a necessary part of my workflow.

Lewi: that's exactly what I did - but I forgot I'd modelled in some creases which had made it non-symmetrical again, so I just repeated the process and all was well.

For what it's worth, using the symmetry finder seems worthwhile even on a symmetrical mesh. I got a better map with it than without.

Glad you got it working. Smile Its pretty tricky going back to other apps to UV map after you have used UVLayout. I only lasted a few months before I had to buy it.

v1.11.1 shows the older symmetry boundary tool in action, v1.15B shows some later tweaks to it, and v1.17 shows the new symmetry find tool for meshes with symmetric topology.
