For some reason I find that I can't get in nice and close when trying to 'cut up' something small like this pipe. When I try to pull it close to see the lines better, it just disappears.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

That's the front or back clipping planes by the looks of it. What it means is that the center focus point of the view is off in space somewhere and not anywhere near the geometry you're trying to zoom into.
If you want to zoom in to look at something in detail, use the Home or '.' hotkeys. That will focus the view on the polygon under the mouse pointer, and if you want to see more than that, zoom out from there.
Or use the wheel button to zoom in (assuming you have one on your mouse). If you aim the mouse pointer as a piece of mesh, the view will focus in on that geometry while its zooming in.

Ahhhhh.... thank you Phil.. will try that this afternoon.. as you may remember I have to use the laptop and the window is soooooo small after doing everything else on the big screen, I need to get up close and personal with the polys. |

Thanks Phil.. pointing the cursor onto the part I want brought forward works really great and although I can't seem to be able to move up or down.. this works almost as well .. although my poor wheel on the mouse is taking a beating. |

Did you try the Home key? If you dont have one (my mac laptop doesn't) then use the full stop key instead.
