What do groups / materials take into consideration, clusters ?

The grouping information displayed in UVLayout is how its organized in the OBJ file. Unfortunately I cant say anything more that that for sure, because each different model application maps the groups in the OBJ file onto different concepts within that package.

If the obj was exported from within Softimage the answer is yes, clusters will come as Materials groups into uvlayout. Polygon groups are each mesh (remember you can export several objects in one single obj).
