What does this mean, shells? Is that polys?
I am trying to edit some pre-existing uv's and can't get the model imported |

"UV Shells" are the separate pieces (i.e. islands) of geometry in UV space.
It could be that your modeling application has given each poly unique UV coords, which means that every polygon will come in as a separate shell. If that's the case, you can fix it by ticking "Weld UVs" in the Load Options window.
If that doesn't help, maybe you really do have a lot of shells, so increase "Max Shells" in the Load Preferences; click on the "About UVLayout" button at the top of the GUI to get to that.
