Hiya,

is there any way to control the following under pattern/Subdivide?

* Wire density
* Resources allocated
* Keep materials
* Keep groups?

I clicked subdivide to flatten a dense, tangled wire - just to see what'd happen.
Love the shiny subD quads, hate the density and loss of groups for easier seleciotn

No, sorry, the subdivide tool is very basic; it was only added to help someone who was trying to flatten twisted cubes for a sculpture project. In that case more faces were needed to get an accurate outline that he could then cut out of sheet metal to bend back into the twisted cube shapes.

Most modeling packages these days have their own subdivide tools, with lots of parameters to play with, so maybe your best approach would be to use whatever modeling application you have to edit the mesh before loading it into UVLayout.

I'm a Max user, so for my own wires, I use a cage and subD. works fine Smile

But - mine isn't an uncommon user scenario:

In this instance, I am working on flattening someone else's wire for texturing, and followed the tip in the manual to bump the density for a flatter wire. (experimentally, but it did give me a much better map)
I can understand not implementing a set of subD-tools, but if you're going to tweak it in the future, any chance of retaining groups, and being able to set application resource allocation? 'cause on a tangled mesh, that subD thing *eats* resources, I had to redefine all my groups - no fun on a deadline, and I'm on a pretty shiny box Smile
