Pressing keys choose whole edgeloops instead of single edge

As the topic says, pressing single C marks the whole edgeloop instead of a single edge and same for other marking keys like, for example, I.
Is there any way to stop this from happening?

Open up the Edit panel and check that "D" is selected for edge tagging. This is "drag" mode which means a single key press selects a single edge, but press-and-hold the key and move the mouse to extend the selection in that direction.
