|

I must say that I got a little disappointed after I bought the student license after watching the tutorials.
I bought the program simply because some of those features looked awesome. But now after I've installed it I figure out that those features are missing.
I'm not allowed to use this program with commercial products, so why restrict it?
I got hyped up for this program simply because some other students showed it to me with a "pirated" version. I wanted to support this product so I bought it.
And as a student, I don't have the money to get the full version either.
The question is simply, why restrict it if the main restriction would be that you're not allowed to use the student version with commercial products? |

I'm sorry to hear you are disappointed with the Student version, so if you would like a refund, send me some email.
We do offer schools quite good discounts on Professional Floating licenses, so maybe you can talk yours into purchasing some. We are also happy to provide schools with 30 day evaluation licenses if they want to try before buying.

No, I don't want a refund. I do like your tool so congratulatons on making it.
I just wonder why the restictions are like they are?
I would believe you would get more money from actually removing some of the restrictions on the student version seeing as the restriction on it is good enough as it is, not being able to use that license on stuff one may make outside of school projects and so forth.
Now people are just downloading pirated versions instead simply because they wont bother with not having all the tools on the student version contra the "normal" ones. And like me, most students cant afford paying for the other options.
We have tried to get our school to get discounts on other plugins and tools, but its too much of a "hassle" dealing with it, so we have to buy our own stuff if we want to learn them outside of the schools curriculum. And the reality is that most students get pirated programs and plugins simply because they cant afford them at that point of their lives.
The good part of that though, is that they most likely will bring those programs they've learned into their job surroundings making them get the tools they need to be efficient. So the more students you have using your tool, the more you'll earn at a later date. |

"I just wonder why the restictions are like they are? "
Basically because I cant be looking over everyone's shoulders to check what they're using their copy of UVLayout for. To make a cheaper version of UVLayout available, I chose to cut some features out. Applying other sorts of less hardwired restrictions might have affected sales of the Pro version.
I appreciate that as a student you have restricted funds, and its great that you decided to support the product by buying a license! Even though the current Student/Hobbyist versions don't have as many tools as the full Pro version, they are still much better than earlier Pro versions. You're also getting all of the bug fixes and optimizations that the Pro users get. This last couple of weeks I've been going back over the core flattening code, and its now over 2x faster; you'll be getting that in the next update. So there's lots of advantages to purchasing a license like you have, versus just grabbing the "unofficial" free versions off the web.

i do see the reasons behind the restrictions, without the restrictions, there will be no Pro Version to use, because its all given out to the cheaper versions.
we also need to understand the integrity of the product and the value that its worth. people sweated out creating this awesome product, and it would be a shame if it would not have been given the justice it deserved.
cheers! |

Oh?
Well that definitely caught my attention.
I've been holding off updating my expired Pro subscription because... [insert feeble excuse here]
I use 2.06.03 Pro nearly every day though and 2x faster flattening sounds like a really nice incentive.
What version are you talking about, Phil? Has it been released yet? If I renew now do I get to test drive the beta? |

"Has it been released yet?"
Not quite yet ... hopefully the beta release for the faster flattening and packing will be later this week or early next. There's also been some speed improvements to loading and cutting up etc for big meshes (i.e. >100k polys).
And yes, if you renew your support, you will get access to that beta on the uvlayout.com Support Extras page.
