For anyone who might find this useful.

To avoid the expense of needing the Sketchup pro version solely to export Obj file type rather than the not so useful Skp file type.

Rename the .skp file name extension to .zip ( eg mybrilliantmodel.skp becomes mybrilliantmodel.zip)
Unzip your newly named zip file
Inside the unzipped folder you will find a file with extension .dae, thats the collada file
open the .dae file with any 3D app that reads collada... job done! Obviously at this point you can export as an obj if thats the end goal.

Phil I'm glad you are so easily sold lol, ignore the maya/max/xsi,houdini,C4d of this world...the 1 to watch is sketchup Smile ROFL

Ok I won't derail this thread any further... promise

JamesH.. Good point on Fbx being pretty well a closed sdk, bugs n all.
