I seem to be missing something on this workflow. I have a plane model all cut up and UV'd (beautifully I might add!!) But there are quite a few pieces that are identical and are being stacked. But after I get everything stacked (and in thier own box) and then run a pack, the boxes resize because the stacked shells lay out side to side. I tried locking but that just prevents the box from moving, not the stacked shells within the box from moving. I really dont know if a box is required here, I was just trying to keep the stacked shells stacked.

I thought you could stack shells, put them in a box (or somehow keep them stacked) and then be still able to run a pack and it would pack the "visible shells" while maintaining the stacking underneath. Am I missing something?

Yes, I'm sure there's is a way to do what you want. I'll make a video showing how its done sometime this afternoon!

OK, for the stack'n'pack workflow, see the new UVLayout-Stack-and-Pack video under the Advanced section of the uvlayout.com videos.

Wow! Awesome. Thank You!

I see what I was doing. I was pressing "L" WITHIN the box (which was only selecting the topmost shell) Never thought to press "L" in open space and drawing a selection box!

Oh, and I also never thought to just use the grid to stack identical shells. I was going thru the whole "S" key-gather-match point- flip-stack blah blah blah for every stacked shell (type). Razz

"I was pressing "L" WITHIN the box"

I did the exact same thing myself when doing a trial run for the video, so I'm wondering if I should make it a bit smarter, make 'L' lock all shells under the pointer, instead of just the top one.

"I was going thru the whole "S" key-gather-match"

Yeah, that work-flow is mainly suited to a large number of matching shells (e.g. teeth, buttons, hair strips etc). For a couple of shells, grid snapping is a lot quicker!

Hmmm, thats a tough one. (now that I think about it) I actually felt a little stupid once I saw how easy it was (drawing a selection box). And it actually made sense to me. Many other tools work the same way when selected in open space and a selection box is drawn around shells. The specified function is performed on all contained shells. That's consistency. Just one (newbie's) opinion..your mileage may vary. Smile

I seem to have the same problem,

though.. I watched the video already,

Flipped all shells I wanted to stack with <-
Selected all shells per pair and pressed "new box"
Locked all the boxes with L + drag a box with left mouse,

After that,
I press pack all and the boxes turn red, except for 1 box which blinks green once and then nothing happens.

In screenshot attached you can see what it looks like after I press pack

Don't know if this helps, but I use copy UV to stack.
Then lock the pack.

well, I have already stacked everything, only the packing fails atm.

I have manualy packed now, but for now I am only sculpting the model in mudbox, so unless someone might know the solution in time I'll just have to keep this layout,

although for my next assignment it might be usefull to know how to do use auto-packing for more efficiancy.

So I don't go chasing a bug that's not there anymore, which version are you using? There were some fixes to the pack'n'stack process about when I made that video.
