Hey there, after a dozen different attempts I've got something that *to me* looks useable. I'd really like to know if there are any problems with this or something I could do better from you experts. I can't seem to get rid of the red left though.

Its impossible to completely get rid of the red in an arrangement (like you have) where you're trying to minimize the number of seams. If you cut that top seam down a bit more you could relieve some of the pressure, allowing the red to push out. Also some small cuts in from the sides would help as well.

Also keep in mind that the default perspective view will make that texture over the face appear more stretched that it really is; switch to Ortho (under the Display panel) to get a better feel for relative texture sizes over the whole mesh.
