I've run into a situation with Zbrush3 where the incoming model
can have a ton of seperate islands. It would be nice to be able
to marquee-select all the islands and then hit 'shift-d' to send them
all back at once into 'Edit'-mode for re-cutting.

Not a major thing, but it might help speed up workflow to have this
option.

cheers!

You almost got it :-) Aim the mouse pointer at clear air, then type Shift-D and box select the shells you want to un-drop. If you then go back to the Ed view you'll see they're all still detached, so do the same again (Shift-D box) to weld them all back up together as if they'd never been detached and dropped.

Just be careful .. if it's a high poly model, doing this can cause Layout to freeze (Ctrl+Alt+Del > close program is the only option then). Instead, select a smaller quantity of unattached polys at a time. It takes longer but will avoid issues. On my machine I had a ZBrush model of approx 3,000 polys, all of which were detatched. Loading the obj and then dropping everything back down to the Edit screen was ok, but the Shift+D in Edit to reattach everything always caused a freeze.

THe best work arounds were to load the obj with 'New' mapping selected, rather than editing any existing mapping. Or, if you want to keep the original map, I would pass the obj through UV Mapper first .. it's a great prog for sorting out obj irregularities (it's a rare mesh that won't open in Mapper).

Send me a file and I'll take a look at the problem if you want. Like you said though, loading with "New" selected is the best way to do it if you want all polys "unflattened". Maybe though someone someday will want to selectively unflatten a large number, so it would be good to fix the bug.

Not sure it was a bug, exactly. More likely my ram (1 gig). I'll extract some obj's from ZBrush this weekend and see if I can replicate .. I'll send you one if I can freeze Layout.

Any bit of code thats a memory hog is a bug, so I'd love to see that file if you can get it to fall over. There's no panic though, whenever its convenient is fine by me.
