Hi Phil!

I have evaluated uv-layout for quite some time now to hopefully give some constructive feedback.

Ok here goes.

The interface is still very technical and relies much on ones know how in shortcut key commands (for me working in max, maya, realflow, adobe products.. its yet another layout to learn) .. perhaps simplify the entry level by having a maya hotbox style interface or right click max/photoshop/ae drop down menu system ?
I love the evolution of new relax tools but when a less new tool makes obsolete why not that that away?
And a must as you already pointed out as limitation are the lack of undo. Every other program has it, and when you don't have it you feel crippled.
Maybe a way of changing the graphical visualisation instead of Red Green Blue colors to determine imperfections and stretching. Maybe a customization colorwheel could be a nice feature? I myself would like to have a Red Yellow Green customization, much like a streetlight which says when u can go and not Smile

I'll write more whenever I see that I got a reply Smile

Best regards
/Micha

Hi Micha (welcome to 'unlurker' status Very Happy )

I hope this doesn't come off as totally countering your points, but I've
found that getting used to the shortcuts isn't that difficult for me (I use
many of the same programs). I agree that the UI could be improved
in it's integration, but for me it 'functions' quite well now that I've used
UVLayout for some time. Maybe that's just the point...I've gotten used
to it. <shrugs> I agree that customizing shortcuts to match other software
could be a good option tho (and I think Phil sees the merit in this as well).

I'm pretty sure 'undo' is quite near to finished and we'll see it soon. Wink

I also disagree with the stoplight analogy, as it doesn't seem to relate
to what it's applying to...namely, there should be 2 'redlights' (stretching
and pinching) with only 1 'greenlight' (minimally deformed polys). As it stands
now, red and blue are arbitrarily chosen to indicate what's happening and
green is 'go'. Smile

Anyhow, not trying to offend, just have a different opinion. Smile

Kind regards,

twocust

Yes I'll be looking at some better way to introduce people to the long list of hotkeys, plus already on the wish list is a hotkey editor to you can change them to things you might already be familiar with or find easier to remember.

... but when a less new tool makes obsolete why not that that away?
In case the new tool doesn't work with someones particular model. Especially while things are in development still, its also good to have a fallback position if the new tool is buggy.

And a must as you already pointed out as limitation are the lack of undo.
Should be out this coming week sometime. All the coding is done, I'm just testing and fixing bugs now.

Maybe a way of changing the graphical visualisation instead of Red Green Blue
On that wish list is also a color editor, so people can pick their own colors for the various graphics, and I could easily add the Error colors to that.

So most of what you've asked for is already on the list of things to do. Once I get this Undo out of they way, I'll put up a new poll so people can vote for what they'd most like to see next.

Phil

No point re-inventing the wheel on that one .. a simple mouse-over should do. Alternatively, if that would be too distracting (and there's no easy way to turn it off), you could do something similar to ZBrush. Not everyone's favourite GUI, but a much loved feature is when you mouse over a button and hit Ctrl, you get a text box with a brief description of the tool. Click once and the box closes. So it's there for when you need help, but doesn't get in the way when you don't.

Yes, mouse over hints are great for buttons, but hotkeys have nothing to point at :-) I'll probably make buttons/icons then for the hotkeys at some point, with the option to go into "expert" mode for those who know the hotkeys and want the current minimal look.

I do not have any problems with the hotkeys.
Like Phil wrote, when you use the app a lot, you get used to it.
Keep up the good work Phil.

Peace,
