It's a no brainer. Export as .obj from XSI, map in UVLayout and import the .OBJ back in. No problems. Maps are where they belong.

Sounds great! A toggle function. And yes, it's nice to only tag opposing sides. I have not thought about it, but often it is necessary to leave the ends 'bend' to prevent massive distortions.
